Oxford PharmaGenesis is delighted to support a funded DPhil studentship in Translational Health Sciences in collaboration with Green Templeton College at the University of Oxford, UK. The studentship will examine the importance of diversity in dermatology, particularly when applying emerging techniques in artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Applications are now open. Please help to spread the word! The project will explore perspectives and concerns about racial and ethnic bias in the development, uptake and implementation of digital health technologies/artificial intelligence for skin disease. The information can be harnessed to deliver patient-centred care that is inclusive of the diversity of human skin.
In addition, the project will examine the issues associated with the adoption of these disruptive technologies. The successful candidate will develop strategies that ensure that digital tools are effectively integrated into established care pathways, for example to support timely diagnosis of people who need urgent care.
The studentship will cover tuition fees (home or overseas) and will include an annual stipend of at least £16,077. Candidates with family commitments will be eligible for an additional allowance to help with childcare costs during their studies.
Working at one of the world’s leading research universities, the successful candidate will be supervised by Professor Catherine Pope (Senior Research Fellow), Professor John Powell (Professor of Digital Health Care) and Dr Abi McNiven (Senior Qualitative Researcher).
This studentship forms part of a larger and ongoing partnership with Green Templeton College. This year, Oxford PharmaGenesis has supported the Green Templeton Lectures on science and the media and the Human Welfare Conference on arts and human welfare. In addition, Chris Winchester, CEO of Oxford PharmaGenesis, is an associate fellow and member of the Principal’s Circle, and Richard White, COO of Oxford PharmaGenesis, is a common room member of the college; both Chris and Richard mentor a diverse group of students at the college. Oxford PharmaGenesis welcomes the opportunity to further strengthen our partnership with Green Templeton College through this studentship.
“Patients are at the heart of everything we do; we are therefore thrilled to support this studentship, which will help to better understand and address racial and ethnic inequalities in the field of digital healthcare,” said Chris Winchester. “Advancing diversity and inclusivity is of great importance to our clients, our company and our employees. We are excited to create the opportunity for the successful candidate to draw on best research practices to help optimize the equitable use of digital tools in dermatological practice, for the benefit of all.”
Sir Michael Dixon, Principal of Green Templeton College, said “This is an important new area of research and I’m delighted that we can extend the college’s partnership with Oxford PharmaGenesis to pioneer fresh thinking. I’m grateful for the ongoing support of CEO Chris Winchester and look forward to further developing our partnership. I’m particularly pleased that this studentship will offer the possibility of a childcare allowance for the successful candidate as an extension of Green Templeton’s family-friendly and enabling environment for all.”
