All of us are aware of the Syrian refugee crisis, and many of us will be thinking about how the refugees will fare over the coming winter months. Most of these people are still in countries neighbouring Syria, often in tented camps or makeshift shelter. They will need increasing assistance as the temperatures fall.
In previous years, we have supported medical or patient-oriented charities at this time of year. This year, in line with feedback following our company meeting, we have broken with this tradition to provide practical support to refugees, through Care International.
Care International is providing assistance to people inside Syria and to refugee families in neighbouring countries, including Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, as well as providing emergency assistance and medical aid to refugee families crossing into Europe. The charity estimates that there are approaching 4.5 million Syrian refugees abroad and another 6.5 million displaced people living within Syria.
Now in its fifth year, the Syrian crisis has been described by the UN as ‘the biggest humanitarian emergency of our era’.
